Sports have been a favorite pastime of humans for many years, from the ancient days of greece and before, up through modern day. Many sports that we developed and played in ancient times evolved through time and culture to the modern day sports we enjoy watching today. Math and science have been around for just as long as sports have. But from thousands of years ago to even just 30 years ago, no one could see a connection there. But now starting recently we have started to evolve these games ourselves using math and science to change and how we see the game. Cultural critics widely agree that media tends to negatively influence women and all the critics point to research which supports the belief that women are portrayed as subordinate to men, having no self control and having little self confidence in themselves. Through the use of advertisements, Kilbourne agrees that advertisements provide the idea that women cannot make decisions on their own by issuing, â€Å"Ad after ad implies that girls and women don’t really mean â€Å"no† when they say it, that women are only teasing when they resist men’s advances† (462). Even though Kilbourne does not explicitly state that women cannot make their own decisions, the simple shameful advertisement that depicts a women who doesn’t mean no when she is trying to resist a man that is pressuring her into having sexual affairs, provides the message that women cannot make their own decisions because the man pressuring her believes that a woman won’t make the decision. Aside from the fact that the advertisements Kilbourne provides prove that the media sends a message that women cannot make their own decisions, but Carmen D. Siering also proves that in addition to a woman not capable of making her own decisions, a woman also has no self control. In Siering’s article â€Å"Taking a Bite out of Twilight,† Siering states, â€Å"Bella, on the other hand, is never able to do the same. From their very first kiss, she is fighting to control her awakening sexuality† (439). Siering states this in her article as she is breaking down female sexuality in the novel, Twilight. The simple fact in her statement is that Bella cannot resist Edward and cannot control her sexuality and lust for him. Both Siering and Kilbourne relate to each other through different forms of writing by implicitly agreeing that media portrays women as if they cannot make their own decisions and that women have no self control. Although the media generates the idea that women have no self control, the media also provokes the misleading idea that women have no self confidence in themselves. Through the various messages and ideas that advertisement, television shows, cartoons and even books sell- women tend to lose self confidence in themselves, but the media tends to send the message that women already have no self confidence. In â€Å"Love My Neighbors, Hate Myself: The Vicissitudes of Affect in Cosmetic Surgery,† Virginia Blum opens up her articles with an observation about the sudden rise in the number of popular television shows about plastic surgery and the shift of increasing numbers of women that receive plastic surgery. In her article regarding the reasons women desire plastic surgery, Blum states, â€Å" certain conventional cultural values had to be recruited on behalf of representing these surgeries not as vain and superficial but as a route toward glowing self improvement, not as acts of self- loathing but as evidence of self esteem† (802). Although Blum never apparently states that women have no self confidence in themselves, the audience gathers and concludes that women receive plastic surgery to help boost their self confidence and that it is socially acceptable and normal to allow image to determine self confidence. Besides Blum’s article, another scholar, Jean Kilbourne, also relates her thoughts and seems to agree that media portrays a woman as if she has no self confidence. In her article, Kilbourne is pointing out the shameful difference in the way society views a group of men between the way society views a group of women. Kilboure expresses in her article, â€Å"For men, though, there are no such consequences. Men’s bodies are not routinely judged and invaded† (467). As Kilbourne relates this expression in her article, it proves to the audience that society and media has a harsher critical opinion of the appearance of women in comparison to the appearance of a man that decreases the self confidence of a woman. Virginia Blum and Jean Kilbourne both effectively distribute their beliefs and relate to each other in terms that women have no self confidence in themselves through the use of reality television shows and popular young adult novels. Furthermore in relation to the influence of women through media, the media also identifies women as if they are merely an object. This misleading message that media portrays lies directly in television shows that include cartoons and superhero’s and even young adult novels such as Twilight. In Julie O’ Reilly’s article, â€Å"The Wonder Woman Precedent: Female (Super) Heroism on Trial,† O’ Reilly argues the distinctions between the ways male and female superheros are put to the test in their respective characters. While discussing the struggles women have to struggle to pass to attain the satisfaction of even becoming a superhero, O’ Reilly states, â€Å"The trials serve as a periodic repositioning of super-powered women from the active subjects they must be in order to function as heroes to the more passiveor at least submissiveobjects they must become to undergo these trials† (452). In this statement, O’ Reilly is arguing that women are in fact an object. Carmen D. Siering also agrees with O’ Reilly’s statement in her article â€Å" Taking a Bite out of Twilight† and decides to include that, â€Å"Bella is a prize, not a person, someone to whom things happen, not an active participant in the unfolding story† (439). Siering provides her example in her article as she sets up the unfolding story of Twilight. Not only do Siering and O’ Reilly relate in agreement, but so do the scholars Katha Pollitt and Jean Kilbourne. Although the scholars use different types of media to agree that women are identified as merely an object, all four of the scholars effectively agree and prove their points. In Katha Pollitt’s, â€Å"The Smurfette Principle,† Pollitt claims, â€Å" boys are individuals, girls types† (545). Pollitt issues her claim as she issues the degrading truth that boys are the â€Å"norm† and girls are the â€Å"variation† to prove that women are not in the same classification as men. In addition to prove the scholar’s agreements upon women portrayed as an object, Jean Kilbourne explains in her article that violence can be justified more easily if a person becomes an object. Kilbourne then states: â€Å"The person becomes an object and violence is inevitable. The step is already taken with women† (466). Kilbourne issues this claim as she verifies that objectification leads to violence and that women are already objectified, therefore violence is already â€Å"inevitable. † Through exemplification, the four scholars agree that women are in fact identified in media as merely an object in today’s society. Throughout media and the history of media, misleading and destructive messages have been sold to the audience. Although the media tends to negatively influence women in the beliefs that women are portrayed as subordinate to men, having no self control and having little self confidence in themselves, a bigger problem may be arising. Now, most people would say they dont know how we lived without them. Having the immediacy of contact through voice, text messages, and video chat is reassuring to a parent - not to mention the ability to locate your child at the  touch of a button. Unfortunately, cell phones often raise other issues for parents. Many parents wonder who their children are constantly texting and chatting with. They worry about whether the kids are sexting or sending inappropriate pictures using an app that the parents have never even heard of, and parents especially worry about the potential for cyberbullying.   Sometimes school can help. Many schools limit cell phone use during the school day while others use them as a teaching tool, reducing the chances of them being misused during the school day. This inaccuracy suggests that something in our lab went awry. When pumping the nitric acid out of the barium sulfate, we overflowed the filter on the vacuum flask, seeing as how we didnt take into account how thick the substance actually was. This mishap was most likely the largest contributor to our inaccuracy. Also, human error is always a factor. Inevitably, somewhere down the line we took a reading wrong or something of that nature, further skewing our results. This lab brought up a few questions for further investigation. After finishing the lab, the question occurred to me, if we had used an alternate method to make five grams of Barium Sulfate, could we have been more accurate, less accurate, or would our results have remained the same? To make a better lab, there are a couple things that could be done. First would be to take better care to observe the substances we work with much more carefully. By doing this, there is less likely of a chance of having something happen such as overflowing the funnel. Also, one could record observations better. Bram Stoker’s Dracula Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a classic example of Gothic writing. Gothic writing was very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the early centuries, Gothic writing would frighten the audience and it was also used as a style of architecture. Dracula, which was first published in 1897, would definitely cause a shock as there was a supernatural being, roaming around sucking people’s blood by the neck. Gothic literature usually includes vampires, monsters or some type of ancient mystical creature. It is also set in medieval castles with secret passages, dungeons and ghost places. There are various types of Gothic literature such as romance and horror. There is just usually horror used but mixing both has also become very popular. Romance on its own was very well-liked in the 19th century. The word Gothic actually comes from the Goths language. A Goth was considered one of a German tribe who invaded Eastern and Western Europe. Gothic was a type of architecture prevalent in Western Europe in the 12th - 16th centuries, it was barbarous, rude and uncouth. Dracula contains a lot Gothic conventions which incite the reader. A convention is the main point of a specific type of writing, for example in Dracula there is the use of journeys/quests, diaries, letters, journals, weird places and strange creatures. These conventions are essential in the story of Dracula and it is important to understand them. Dracula, just like any other gothic piece of writing has a villain/vampire-Dracula, a hero-Jonathan Harker and a victim-Mina. Van Helsing also plays a main role as the slayer of Dracula. Chapter 1, like a lot of the other chapters is written in journal style. This journal is of the main ... ...safe and also the plan to kill Dracula. There is more than one convention but still it will not excite the reader as much as the other chapters. Bram Stoker has created such an effective piece of Gothic Writing as the reader can feel how it would be if they were in the same predicament as some of the characters such as Mina and Jonathan. The conventions express one’s feelings out clear like all the opinions in the journals and the letters to each other. Suspense and fear are something that people express in their own way, not everyone can find the same thing frightening. Some people may just be scared of seeing Dracula and the way he kills everyone by sucking their blood, other people may fear turning into a vampire or becoming a victim. Was Mandela a freedom fighter or a terrorist? Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the Eastern Cape of South Africa (Williams and Hermann, 2012). After hearing the stories of his ancestor’s bravery, he was inspired and he dreamed of making his own impact to his people for freedom. (Venter, 2012). I believe that Nelson Mandela was a freedom fighter and not a terrorist. Sometimes the definitions of those two words may get mixed up and it is quite hard to identify the difference between the two, especially in this case.A terrorist deliberately targets the lives of innocent people for political reasons whereas a freedom fighter takes part in a violent struggle to achieve freedom, they do not aim at the lives of the public. If you were to look at the two definitions, I believe that Nelson Mandela should be classified as a freedom fighter as he did not target the lives of people; he fought for the freedom of the people of South Africa. In 1944 he joined the African National C ongress (A political party made to unite all African people and give everyone equal human rights) (Unwembi, 2011) and was the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the rebellious part of ANC.Even though Umkhonto we Sizwe set up a series of attacks, they were fighting for equal rights and freedom against apartheid as apartheid had dived South Africa into races and eventually had given the ‘White South Africa’ control over the whole of South Africa. Homer is describing all the pain felt by the Achaians and the deaths, of thousands of men in the war. Homer appears to be portraying the war negatively (even if it is a result of Achilles anger), mentioning the pain and men going to the house of Hades in their thousands, which is all negative imagery. Homer then goes on to mention that these men gave their bodies to the delicate feasting of dogs, of all birds. This is a very negative portrayal of war, as Homer is saying in laymans terms, that when these men were killed, dogs and birds ate their corpses. This is not a glorious burial, which would usually be a more positive aspect of war (a glorious death and burial), and so paints a very morbid and perverse image of war. In book nine, we hear of the prizes Achilles will receive from Agamemnon should he return to fight for the Greeks. Prizes seem to be described as one of the main motivations for the warriors fighting (behind glory, even though the prizes represent their glory). Agamemnon promises Achilles he can choose for himself twenty of the Trojan women, who are the loveliest of all, after Helen of Argos in book nine for example. Homer is describing war in a positive aspect here; in effect he is saying if you are successful in war, you will be rewarded (be it with women or other materialistic possessions). Homer mentions prizes throughout the Iliad, another example is when you kill a warrior you obtain his armour. Throughout the Iliad we see how the Gods influence the war: For example in book one, we hear Zeus agree to Thetiss request that the Greeks should suffer in the absence of Achilles. So the gods control the war, not the men, which, although Homer doesnt explicitly allude to, is a negative portrayal of the war, as the men are fighting, and the gods are just playing with the men like toys to get back at one another, as if the war was just a game. So the outcome of the war is at the discretion of the gods, whether men live or die. For example during the aristeia of Diomedes (book 5 of the Iliad), when Diomedes encounters Ares, Pallas Athene rides beside Diomedes on a chariot she seized from Sthenelos. Ares hurls his bronze spear towards Diomedes, but Athene interferes, catches the spear and pushes it away from the car. Then Diomedes, with the assistance of Athene drives his bronze spear deep into the belly of Ares, who is consequently saved by Zeus. In book six, Homer describes Hectors farewell to his wife Andromache and his child; Achilles later kills Hector. This shows the war to be negative as it brings a sense of reality back to the Iliad. It reminds you of the families these men being slaughtered are leaving behind; it is demonstrating the negative result of war upon everybody. There are a lot of positive things that Homer alludes to, such as the glory of an aristeia (Diomedes and Agamemnons), defeating a prestigious opponent and the prizes for succeeding at war (be it at the discretion of the Gods). But interspersed into the glorified battle are reminders of the true horrors war brings upon people: bodies being eaten by dogs, leaving families behind when killed and the brutal nature in which people were killed. Overall I feel that Homer portrays war in both a positive and negative fashion, highlighting the glories of battle, but also presenting the morbidity of war.
