Ancient Greek Flood Myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha

The story of Noahs ark is not the only flood story in mythology: There are many others. The story of Deucalion and Pyrrha is the Greek version. Like the version found in the Old Testament, in the Greek version, the flood is a means to punish mankind. The Flood in the Context of Greek Mythology According to Hesiods Theogony, there were five â€Å"ages of man†: the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Ages, the Age of Heroes, and the Iron Age. The Golden Age was a time of virtue and plenty under the leadership of the Titan Cronus. This delightful period, however, ended in a war when the children of Cronus joined together to battle against the Titans.The Silver Age began after Cronus was deposed by his children, led by Zeus. Now, instead of the Titans, the world was ruled by the Olympians. Less brilliant as the Golden Age, the Silver Age was a time during which human beings refused to obey the gods. Zeus ended the Silver Age by killing the humans who had displeased him and sending them to the underworld.After a period of time, Zeus decided to create a new type of human being. The men of the Bronze Age were strong and aggressive, with weapons, armor, and homes made of bronze. These terrible men worshiped the war god Ares, ate the hearts of their enemies, and finally destroyed one another.Disappointed by the Bronze men, Zeus sent a great flood. The flood was followed by a new era called the Age of Heroes, during which the gre at Trojan wars were fought. Great men were born during this era; after their deaths, they spent eternity in the delightful Elysian Fields.Finally, after the heroes had played their role, Zeus created the Age of Iron. As with all the other ages, it is doomed to a final failure, at which point Zeus will return to remake the world. The Story of the Flood Warned by his father, the immortal Titan Prometheus, Deucalion built an ark to survive the coming Bronze Age-ending flood that Zeus sent to punish mankind for its wickedness. Deucalion and his cousin-wife, Pyrrha (daughter of Prometheus brother Epimetheus and Pandora), survived for 9 days of flooding before landing at Mt. Parnassus. All alone in the world, they wanted company. In answer to this need, the Titan, and goddess of prophecy ​Themis cryptically told them to throw the bones of their mother behind them. They interpreted this as meaning throw stones over their shoulders onto Mother Earth, and did so. The stones Deucalion threw became men, and those Pyrrha threw became women. Deucalion and Pyrrha settled in Thessaly where they produced offspring the old-fashioned way. Their two sons were Hellen and Amphictyon. Hellen sired Aeolus (founder of the Aeolians), Dorus (founder of the Dorians), and Xuthus. Xuthus sired Achaeus (founder of the Achaeans) and Ion (founder of the Ionians).

It cost the Army to have Doctors there for the Soldiers to see, it cost money to have people there to work CIF, Finance, Household Goods and many other facets of the Army. That right there cost the Army money that would have otherwise been saved. Now that the Soldier missed the appointment they caused the Army to waste a certain amount of money that could have been used for another area. Now let’s look at the math. If you have ten Soldiers that each make an appointment and each person they are suppose to see has an average hourly wage of thirteen dollars an hour and each work an eight hour day when they where suppose to be off that comes out to $104 per person. Now ten employees multiplied by $104 comes out too $1040. If all ten soldiers miss their appointments you can see the amount of money that was wasted because ten Soldiers decided not to show up. Ethics and Accounting Decisions Regulation of accounting systems seeks to ensure the reliability of the information that accounts provide. â€Å"However, no regulation can be as effective in ensuring liability as holding accountants to high ethical standards† (Horngren, 2008). Organizational and individual ethics influence critical decision-making processes, with potentially negative results affecting the bottom line. Ethics are based in part on core values imparted on individuals throughout a lifetime. Each person perceives right and wrong based upon ethics and consequently his or her actions will follow these parameters. Technology also promotes organizational ethics; however, ethical and moral conflicts will increase work-related stress amongst employees. This behavior negatively influences organizational behavior. Guillermo must decide whether to transition from manufacturing to distribution, and if he does remain in manufacturing, are there potential ethical violations if he continues to broker as well. This author believes Guillermo would have the personal ethical dilemma of continuing to employ human labor from his city, or transition to a more automated production thus saving him money from his bottom line, and making the company more efficient and effective. The current economy has been shaped with bad ethical decisions in accounting practices. One only needs to look as far as Tyco, Enron and WorldCom to understand how pressure to perform and expand can corrupt a company. The bottom line for Guillermo Furniture Company will be how Guillermo responds to the competition and how his desire to remain ndependent affects his decision making process. Relevant Accounting Information and Decision Making The most relevant accounting information for Guillermo to consider would be the following examples. †¢ Short and Long-Term Demand Forecasts, Revenue Generation, Pricing, Cost, and Profit Margin for each Business Segment. †¢ ROI in months / break even when determining the ROI on New Technology Investment †¢ Compare Expected Revenue, Margins and Net Income from all three business opportunities. Forecasting demand for each segment, pricing and production costs for each opportunity †¢ Assets Management†¦. Develop a plan to support assets that are profitable, and a plan to divest the underperforming. Conclusion The Guillermo Furniture Company has enjoyed years of profitability without constructing a business dynamic plan. With the larger direct competition moving in, this has shown the weaknesses in the Guillermo Furniture Company. Guillermo must immediately change the course of direction in order to remain solvent in the current marketplace. Answer: Introduction: As it is people believe that nursing is a very noble profession and every nurse renders selfless service. Being a professional nurse call for performing a very complex task and at times the nurses feel that their nursing training should be incorporated with some training in aerobatics and tight rope walking since they have to perform a task which needs to balance between two contradicting duties. Discussion: When handling a terminally ill patient the nurse knows for sure that this patient is not going to get back home after recovery. The ethical demand on the nurse is that the patient should be given encouragement and build up his enthusiasm but at the same time the patient has the right to know the exact position of the sickness he or she is suffering from. This then puts the poor nurse into what is colloquially called a Dicey situation. In fact the nurse now finds herself in apposition where she has to choose between two evils(Gevinson, 1997). If she speaks out the truth and informs the full truth as is known to her then the patient feels very sad and this may even have an adverse effect on the main treatment. On knowing that he or she is terminally ill the patient may want to satisfy all his unmet wants and desires and not cooperate in the medical process that is being administered by the hospital. Many cases are known where such patients try out some extreme tricks for hood winking the medical authorities. The situation is likely to worsen. Again if the nurse makes a false statement that the patient will recover within a short time then the right of the patient to know the truth is violated. In such situations the nurse can only act diplomatically and remain politically correct. It is felt that the best thing to do under such circumstances is to interact with the patient cautiously and claim to be ignorant of the actual truth. All that get normally shared with the patient is that he or she is not the first patient who has that particular ailment and there are millions of people who suffer from similar ailments and have obtained medical treatment in this hospital. Technically speaking, this may be construed as being unethical but then also the basic concept of care is being delivered. The patient knows that he or she is not the first one to be struck by this sickness and the people who are handling them are quite experienced in delivering proper treatment to him or her. The anxiety of the patient is set to rest in an indirect manner. Here strictly speaking ethics have been violated but care and comfort have been delivered(Waubrafoundation, 2015). Though ethics may have been compromised with but the good act of delivering comfort perhaps more than makes up the fault (or is it lapse). The International Council of Nurses mentions in their preamble of the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses that nurses are required to perform four basic duties and these are promoting health, preventing illnesses, restoring health and reduce suffering. They must respect the human rights, right to life, patients be treated with dignity and respect. The aspects of creed, gender, color, age, creed, illness or disabilities, social and economic status, nationalities and culture should not make any difference to the care and attention that the nurse has to deliver(Icn, 2012). While the aspects of cast, creed and all the rest of the points mentioned in the preamble are easily handled the matter of interpersonal ethics turn out to be a very tricky area. The politically well connected or the economically affluent or the socially significant patients have the tendency to expect priority attention bordering of being pampered. While the expression tricky situation has been used above, it may be taken to mean a sticky situation. Suppose any patient from the above class lands in the hospital with a minor ailment yet they expect that the nurse will always be around to attend to his needs, wants and at times fancies. Usually the number of nurses present on duty is limited (and this is an important economic consideration of the hospital) and thus the patient to nurses ration will get severely jeopardized if one nurse gets busy with only one patient(Nswnma, 2008). Conclusion: While the hospital will not increase the nurse patient ratio, still the demand for her exclusive service and attention to just one particular patient will be asked for. Such patients who are public figures can create damages to the image of the hospital and hence the nurse is at the receiving end. If she delivers exclusive attention then she is at fault for violating nursing ethics with other patients and if she does not give exclusive attention then she is neglecting significant patients.
